Vision Board Party

We have continued our efforts to expand the concept of visualizing one’s dreams and aspirations by introducing vision boards to a group of 7th and 8th grade students. This took place at Dr. Ronald E. McNair School of Digital Communication and Leadership. Vision boards are used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Students found various images that described their life’s ambitions. Some of their ambitions included continuing education, careers, community involvement, traveling, and hobbies.

While a majority of the students had never heard of a vision board prior to the event, many of them had big dreams. By introducing them to the concept of creating vision boards, they were able to use imagery as a means to visualize the goals necessary to achieve their dreams.  Each student received a graduation hat to place on their board. They wrote the year of completion for high school to signify their high school graduation date, which would take place within the next 4 to 5 years. Depending on the next chapter in their educational journey, students utilized additional graduation hats for their anticipated undergraduate and master’s degrees.

The support provided by our volunteers had a profound impact on the participating students. Many of them were on site to speak with students about their dreams. Students were also challenged to articulate what was on their vision board. Our volunteers allowed students to express what they envisioned for their future while offering abundant encouragement.
